Honoring Excellence in Education, Research and Philanthropy
2010 Barbara Harris
Award for Educational Excellence -
Cecilia Gutierrez, MD
The California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is
proud to name Cecilia Gutierrez as the 2010 Barbara Harris Award for
Educational Excellence.
Dr. Gutierrez is a family physician from the UC San Diego
Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, where she has a busy clinic and
dedicates significant time to teaching residents and students. Born and raised
in Santiago Chile, Dr. Gutierrez comes from a rich family background of
educators and physicians.
Dr. Gutierrez enjoys the challenges of seeing people of all
ages and backgrounds. Her approach to medicine is to foster shared decision - making and to promote preventive medicine and well being for all.
Dr. Gutierrez received her medical degree 18 years ago at the UC Irvine School
of Medicine and completed her residency at UCSD. Teaching has always been Dr.
Gutierrez's passion; she taught biology and physiology at Grossmont College and
San Diego State. She has also taught residency training and continues to teach
as faculty at UCSD.
Curriculum development within the residency is a huge part
of her responsibility; she organizes workshops, develops and coordinates
educational experiences for residents and faculty and designs CME classes for
physicians for the California Department of Corrections.
Dr. Gutierrez enjoys a work-life balance by appreciating
nature and admitting the beauty of the forest or waves. She enjoys hiking,
climbing mountains or walking along the shore. The greatest adventure of her life was a trip
to Antarctica in February 2009. "The majesty of the place, its beauty and
wonder, the wildlife still so adapted to the environment were so spectacular,"
she said. When she's not feeling as adventurous, Dr. Gutierrez appreciates the
opera or a good mystery novel.
Congratulations to 2010 Barbara Harris Award winner Cecilia
Gutierrez.
2010 California
Family Medicine Researcher of the Year -
Derjung "Mimi" Tarn, MD
The Family Medicine Research Award
recognizes excellence in the field
of family medicine research.It honors
those who advance the field of family medicine, through efforts to
promote and
support research in family medicine.
The CAFP Foundation is pleased to
present the 2010 award to Mimi Tarn,
MD.
Dr. Tarn is an assistant clinical
professor of family medicine at the
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She received her medical degree
from
New York Medical College and her bachelors and masters degrees in
biological
sciences at Stanford University. She completed a family medicine
residency at
the University of Southern California-Presbyterian Intercommunity
Hospital in
2002, where she was a chief resident during her final year.
Dr. Tarn takes pride in conducting
research - particularly her
research on physician-patient communication. "My research has
demonstrated that
when prescribing new medications, physicians often do not communicate
important
information that may affect a patient's understanding of how to take a
medication, and why it is important to take it," Dr. Tarn said. "This
may
distract from a patient's ability to take their medications properly,
and
contribute to non-adherence."
Though she says she and her husband
don't have a lot of free time (he
is a city councilman in La Palma), Dr. Tarn does make time to listen to
as many
St. Louis Cardinals games on the radio as possible. Born and raised in
St.
Louis, Dr. Tarn is an avid Cardinals fan and is looking forward to see
how the
Cards will finish this season. When she has a bit more free time, Dr.
Tarn
enjoys traveling, hiking and going to museums.
Here's what others have said about Dr. Tarn:
"Mimi exemplifies excellence in family medicine
research
through her studies, and through her efforts to promote and support
research in
family medicine. She is indeed one of the few family physicians who are
fully
engaged as a researcher, clinician and educator excelling in all."
Patrick Dowling, MD, MPH, Professor and
Chair of Research
Michael A. Rodriguez, MD, MPH, Professor and
Vice Chair of Research
UCLA School of Medicine
"With her unique perspective as both a practicing
physician
and researcher, she is establishing herself as a national figure in the
area of
patient-physician communication surrounding medications. There are few
researchers in the country who use a combination of qualitative and
quantitative research methods to study this aspect of communication as
she
does."
